Solid Earth Physics
Solid Earth Physics is an emerging edge discipline between physics, space science, marine science, and geology. Its main research object is the earth and its surrounding space. It uses the principles and methods of physics to observe various geophysical fields through advanced electronic information technology and space exploration technology to explore the media structure, material composition, formation and evolution of the Earth's ontology and its surrounding space. Various natural phenomena and their changing laws; on this basis, optimize and improve the environment for human survival activities, prevent and mitigate the impact of Earth and space disasters on humans, and detect and develop the much-needed energy and resources in the national economy.
What is solid Earth Physics？
Solid geophysics has three underlying basic disciplines: gravity and geodesy, seismology, and geomagnetism.
Geodesy is one of the oldest disciplines in solid geophysics. It is a discipline that studies the shape of the Earth and the spatial location and geometric relationship of various locations on the ground. On a large scale, the ground is not flat, not even a simple regular surface, and the direction of the plumb line is not always perpendicular to the real ground. Therefore, measuring the azimuth and elevation of a distant location is not a simple matter, but has already formed a specialized discipline.
Seismology is the mainstay of solid geophysics and is widely used. Seismology not only studies natural earthquakes but also uses seismic waves generated by natural or artificial earthquakes to study the structure or other information inside the Earth, especially oil storage structures. Seismic exploration is mainly the use of seismic waves of artificial earthquakes and has now become one of the most important methods of oil exploration.
Geomagnetism is also an ancient discipline. China has known the iron absorption and polarity of magnets during the Warring States Period; geomagnetism is a discipline that clarifies the shape, causes and applications of the Earth's magnetic field. For the interpretation of geological structures, exploration of magnetic deposits and oil have a certain role. Since the ground magnetic field is greatly affected by the space current, geomagnetism is sometimes inseparable from the same day. They are all marginal disciplines between solid geophysics and atmospheric physics or cosmic geophysics.
Solid geophysics also includes geoelectric and geothermal. These two disciplines have a long history of development and are undergoing further development. Within the scope of solid geophysics, there are three subject names, all of which are comprehensive and holistic in the study of the solid earth. They are very different from each other. In particular, gravity and geodesy study and measure the shape, size, and gravity field of the Earth, as well as the disciplines that determine the geometric location of ground points. Gravity and geodetic surveys are important projects in China's construction and are related to the development of land management, mineral development and aerospace.
