A new study finds that although American teachers are more aware of teaching theories, Chinese teachers perform better in mathematics education. Studies of mathematics scores show that Chinese students outperform American peers in almost every field. This difference is still true when comparing students with degrees in mathematics education in China and the United States.
Contemporary mathematics education psychology research shows that China has more understanding of mathematics education. The researchers found that while American teachers have a better understanding of general education theories and classroom skills, Chinese teachers have a better understanding of the topics they teach and a better understanding of the overall mathematics education curriculum covered by their students.
Part of the difference is due to the fact that most American teachers'courses focus on how to teach mathematics rather than mathematics itself. And once American teachers get certified, they usually don't have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the subject.
